WHOIS is a protocol that makes it an easy task to see the details a specific domain name has been registered with through a command line or with the help of special web-based lookup websites. This info includes the names, address and email address of the owner, admin, tech and billing persons as well as the registrar organization the domain name has been purchased through, the creation and expiration dates. With the exception of a few country-code TLDs that have specific limitations, the WHOIS details of any Internet domain can be modified freely anytime, which is quite important given that in accordance with the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details must be current and valid at all times. Failure to conform with these policies could lead to losing the ownership of a domain and in some cases a domain address could even be deleted from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
